Which Format Should I Use?
JPG
The universal standard for photos. Small files, great compatibility. Use when sharing with older software or printing.
PNG
Lossless and supports transparency. Best for logos, UI screenshots, diagrams, and any image with sharp edges or text.
WebP
25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality. Supports transparency. Excellent for the web — supported by every major browser.
AVIF
The newest format. Up to 50% smaller than JPG with striking quality. Supported by Chrome 121+, Safari 16.4+, Firefox 113+.
Why Convert Images?
Image formats matter more than most people realize. The right format shrinks a 5MB photo down to 1MB with no visible loss, which means faster websites, cheaper hosting, quicker email attachments, and happier readers on slow connections. The wrong format bloats your pages, kills Core Web Vitals, and wastes bandwidth on mobile.
PhotoFlip's converter uses the browser's native encoders — the same ones Chrome, Safari, and Firefox use internally — so quality is identical to what you'd get from a desktop tool, and conversion takes a fraction of a second even for large files. Because everything runs locally, you can convert hundreds of images back-to-back without rate limits or waiting on a server queue.

Image Converter FAQ
Yes. Conversion is free, unlimited, and requires no signup.
No. Every conversion happens locally using your browser's built-in encoders. Your image never leaves your device.
Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, and any format your browser can decode. Output: JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF.
WebP is usually the better choice in 2026 — it produces files roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality and is supported by every modern browser. Use JPG only when you need compatibility with older software or print workflows.
AVIF offers the best compression of any modern format (typically 50% smaller than JPG), but browser support is narrower. If you're targeting Chrome 121+, Safari 16.4+, or Firefox 113+, AVIF is excellent for photos on the web.
AVIF encoding is not available in every browser yet. If the conversion fails, try WebP instead — it delivers most of the size savings with universal support.
Converting to PNG is lossless — quality is preserved exactly. JPG, WebP, and AVIF are lossy by default but let you control the quality slider from 1–100%. At 90%, the visual difference from the original is effectively invisible.
PNG, WebP, and AVIF all support transparency. If you convert a transparent image to JPG, transparent pixels will be filled with white since JPG has no alpha channel.
Browser support for HEIC decoding is inconsistent. If this tool cannot read your HEIC file, open it in the iPhone Photos app and export as JPG or use macOS Finder to convert to JPG first.
